What Is The Procedure To Get A Driving License In India?

Whenever we talk about getting a Driving license (DL), we by default start thinking about the long queue, irritated officers, and the vague document filling process. However, getting a driving license is not a big deal and definitely not as tedious as we think.  If you have all the necessary documents and follow the right procedure, you will be able to finish the formalities in few hours. 



What is a driving license?

A driving license is a document that is issued by the government to individuals who are allowed to operate or drive a vehicle on a public road without any supervision. Driving without a license is a crime and a punishable offense in our country. 



Documents you will have to keep read when applying for a driving license in India


  • Duly-filled application form
  • A copy of your Learner’s license

Proof of address (any one of the following)

  • Copy of your Passport
  • Gas bill
  • Water bill
  • Ration Card
  • Bank Passbook
  • Aadhaar Card



Proof of Identity (any one of the following)

  • Pan Card
  • Driving license
  • Ration Card
  • Passport Copy
  • Bank Passbook with Photograph
  • SSLC Certificate
  • Student ID Card
  • Aadhaar Card


Copy of proof of age

  • 10th Standard Certificate
  • Birth Certificate
  • Pan Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Driving license
  • Copy of Passport



All documents related to the vehicle that is used for driving test ( RC book, Insurance copy, etc)

  • 3 passport size photographs

Procedure to apply for a driving license in India

In India, you can apply for a driving license online or by personally visiting the nearby Regional Transport Office (RTO). 

Online procedure


  • Visit the Sarathi website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and choose “New Driving license” option. 
  • Duly fill all the information asked for in the form and click on the “Submit” option. 
  • Upload all the necessary documents along with your duly-filled form. (This includes your ID proof, age proof, address proof, and other such documents). 
  • Once you submit the documents, you will get a confirmation and a web application number will be generated. You can use this number to check the status of your application from time to time. 
  • Once the application has been submitted and processed, an SMS notification will be sent to your registered phone number. 
  • Once, you pay the fees associated,  your appointment details will be shared with you. 
  • Be present at your appointed time and take up the driving test.
  • If you clear it the DL will be sent to your registered address. 

Offline procedure


  • Visit a nearby RTO.
  • Collect the application form from the counter.
  • Fill all the necessary information on the form.
  • Submit the form with a copy of all necessary documents.
  • Pay the necessary fees at the particular counter.
  • Schedule the date and time to take up the driving test.
  • Attend the driving test and if you clear it, the DL will be sent to your registered address.
